Local shops
The majority of villages (excluding Saleres) have a small grocery store,
and often a bakery. Selection is limited, although sufficient for basic
requirements.
Opening hours are
generally 10.00 - 14.00, and 17.00 - 20.00 Monday to Friday, and 10.00
- 14.00 on Saturdays. Most stores tend not to re-open on Saturday afternoons
and are usually closed on Sundays. (See Pinos and Durcal)
Sundays: Pinos has a small store with good butchery dept. (near the church
upper village) - open Sundays am and sometimes in the afternoons too.
Durcal has a small Serprix supermarket which opens in the mornings.
Deliveries of fresh
bread, fruit and vegetables, and fish are made on a daily basis
listen
for the sounds of car horns!
Some great deals on fruit and vegetables can be found at roadside stalls,
and often outside houses, where the housewives sell surplus, family grown
produce.
Durcal has a wider
selection of shops, and a weekly market on a Wednesday morning. Great
for household goods, clothing, fruit and vegetables, it also has an excellent
stall that sells loose herbs and spices very cheaply, plus a very popular
herbal remedy section. Durcal has several supermarkets in the main street
and a fish and produce market in a side street near Bar Florida. Excellent
pasteleria (cakes and bread) in the same street.
In Durcal the SERPRIX
supermarket in C/ General Serrano, just a few metres past the Plaza Garcia
Lorca, opens on Sunday mornings
fresh bread available.

Banks
Normal opening hours
for banks are from 08.30 until 14.00 (this may change slightly in summer
months). In the smaller villages there are some branches with very reduced
hours and no cash machines. In Pinos del Valle there is an ATM next to
the Bar Venecio in the Barrio Alto, and in Lecrin (Talara) there are two
machines opposite the Bar Garvi. In Durcal, along the main road through
the town there are several banks all with cash machines, all offering
a 24-hour service. The La General bank in Durcal has some personnel who
speak English.

Newspapers: English and other national newspapers
are sold at Libreria Duende in C/ Perez Carrillo, Durcal (the main road).
This store is open 7 days a week, from 08.00 - 21.00, except Saturday
and Sunday afternoons. There is a local valley newspaper El Valle. It
is possible to buy English newspapers on the day - Sunday papers need
to be ordered. Another newsagent in the main square also has English newspapers
and is open on Sundays.
Post Offices (Correos): There are two post offices
in the valley. In Lecrin, the opening hours are 09.00 - 11.00 Monday to
Friday, and 09.30 - 11.00 on Saturdays. The post office in Durcal opens
between 08.30 and 14.30 Monday to Friday and 09.30 - 13.00 Saturdays.
Stamps are also sold in 'estancos', which are official tobacconists. Look
for the brown and yellow TABACOS signs.
Film Development: In Durcal there are two places,
both in the main street: Foto Cano and Foto Cecilio.

Major supermarkets: For the widest choice
it is necessary to drive to the outskirts of Granada for Hipercor, Carrefour,
Al Campo. There is also a large Al Campo in Motril on the coast and others
such as Supersol and Mercadona in Almuñecar and Salobreña.
Hipercor: Head north
towards Granada on the N323. Exit at Junction 131 (Mendez Nunez). You
will see Hipercor (El Corte Ingles) directly ahead. Take the third exit
off the roundabout and immediately turn right into a slip road with cars
parked either side. Approximately 100 metres along this road, turn right
into the car park under the store. Keep your ticket with you and pay at
the machines prior to returning to your car. On the floor above is El
Corte Ingles, a major department store. When leaving the car park, take
the exit marked Mendez Nunez. You may only turn right here, and the N323
will now be directly ahead.
Al Campo: is on the
Carretera de Jaen and you will find it easily by taking junction 126 off
the Circonvalacion (Maracena) and turning right. The supermarket is on
the left, past the bus station.
Opening hours for
both stores are 10.00 until 22.00, except Sundays and public holidays.
Car parking at Al Campo is free. At both stores you will need a coin to
release a shopping trolley, refundable when returning the trolley to the
correct location (either 1 euro coin or 50 centimos).

Local Markets:
Monday Niguelas,
Melegis.
Tuesday Pinos, Nerja, Motril. Salobrena night market (summer
only).
Wednesday Durcal.
Thursday Orgiva, Albuñuelas.
Friday Lecrin, Padul, Almuñecar, Motril.
